What Happened
On September 20, 2026, the Government of Canada launched the Black Canadian Communities Program. The federal government will invest C$135.7 million over five years beginning in 2026–27, followed by C$27.1 million annually on an ongoing basis.
The program builds on the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative, which has funded more than 3,000 projects since 2019.
Why It Matters
The important shift is not simply more funding. It is permanence.
The new program has three streams: support for Black children and families; organizational capacity and long-term sustainability; and Black-led projects addressing community-identified priorities. Ongoing annual funding can give Black institutions a more durable base for planning, staffing, services and growth.
