U.K.: BSN 2012 Diversity League Table Published

The 2012 Diversity League Table from the Black Solicitors Network, which was released on November 14, 2012, has shown that while a small number of firms are nearing a 50/50 male-to-female partner ratio, there is still a large drop off in female representation between law firms’ junior and senior ranks.

Matthew Arnold & Baldwin, Pannone, Trowers & Hamlins and Winckworth Sherwood were among the top performers when it comes to female representation at partner level. That said, the respective proportions were still relatively low at 39 per cent, 39 per cent, 35 per cent and 42.5 per cent.

First published in 2006, and now in its seventh year, the BSN Diversity League Table (DLT) is an innovative and ground-breaking diversity initiative in the United Kingdom. DLT reporting covers gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disabilities. Widely considered to be the legal profession’s leading diversity publication, the DLT features analysis, interviews, case studies, commentary and the all-important diversity rankings. The 2012 Diversity League Tables provide a unique look at diversity in the legal profession and features over 70 of the U.K.’s leading firms and Chambers.

Now in their third year, the U.K. Diversity Legal Awards were established to profile, promote and recognize those working across the profession in the U.K. who are making practical and significant contributions in the areas of equality, diversity and fair access.

Awards are presented in the categories of: recruitment, retention and promotion. Awards are also given for “Firm of the Year” and “Chambers of the Year”, as well as the individual award for “Diversity Champion 2012”.

The BSN had a 43% response rate from international firms, 30% response rate from top 100 UK firms and only a 13% response rate from Chambers. Overall, the Awards and the Diversity League Table itself help provide a realistic insight into U.K. diversity in the law issues.
