United Kingdom Profile: Black Solicitors Network

The Black Solicitors Network (BSN) was developed from the vision of four African-Caribbean U.K. solicitors in 1995.  It was formally launched in 2003 as a recognized special-interest group of the Law Society of England and Wales. Since then, the BSN has continued to grow, both in terms of numbers and influence.  It now has a membership of more than 5,500 which includes solicitors, trainees, students and paralegals from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Two BSN directors, Michael Webster and Nwabueze Nwokolo, are members of the U.K.’s Law Society’s Council and one of the BSN’s founding members (and past Chair) Yvonne Brown, is a board member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority. In 2006, the BSN received the Judge’s Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Promoting Race Equality by the Law Society and CRE.” It now has two regional groups, BSN North and BSN Midlands. There is now also the BSN City Group, a forum for the growing numbers of black solicitors and trainees working in and around the Square Mile, which was launched in autumn 2008.  For further information, please call 020 8369 6119 or send an email to enquiries@blacksolicitorsnetwork.com.  Click here for link to Black Solicitors Network

By way of a further update, Nwabueze Nwokolo was elected Chair of BSN at the AGM on 18 November 2010.

In 2008 BSN created a third regional group, BSN City, that is focused upon the activities of commercial lawyers, both in-house and in private practice, working within the the business districts of City of London and Canary Wharf.
