United Kingdom: Laid-off Minority Lawyers Toil For No Pay – What’s New?

In research carried out by U.K. Law Society and published exclusively by The Lawyer in its inaugural report on diversity today,  the Law Society said: “Some BME solicitors [are] working for no pay. In today’s society, with wrangles over the minimum wage, it seems incredible that individuals are still prepared to work without remuneration to fulfil their passion to break into the legal profession.”  Probably more noteworthy than the actual report is the fact the Law Society is “shocked” by its findings.  For many BME solicitors in the U.K., the struggle to enter the profession is certainly not anything new.  A more newsworthy item would be what, if anything, the Law Society intends to do about the situation.  Full article.
